Is Mold Covered on My Homeowner's Insurance?
7/24/2023 (Permalink)
Mold can spread quickly through your Conneaut home or business in as little as 48 hours.
Pesky mold. Almost all homes have it. But is it covered under your homeowner’s insurance to get remediated? Maybe so, maybe not. Read on to get a lesson from SERVPRO of Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties on when mold is a covered loss.
Insurance can be tricky with wording. Thankfully, SERVPRO deals directly with your insurance company to determine if a loss is a covered one. 9 times out of 10 mold is not a covered loss on a traditional homeowner’s policy. But there are some cases where it is. But the source must come from a covered peril.
What is a covered peril? In homeowner’s insurance, a “covered peril” is an event the insurance company agrees to reimburse you for should you file a claim. Covered perils include fire, lightning strikes, windstorms and hail, weight of snow and ice, theft, and vandalism. These examples do not leave much room for coverage for mold, do they?
Let’s talk when mold would be covered. Insurance.com gives some great real-life examples:
- An ice dam forms in a roof gutter during a rough winter. Water backs up under your shingles. The water leaks into your attic, soaks your attic floor and insulation and creates mold.
- A pipe bursts in your home and dumps gallons of water on the floor and saturates drywall. Mold begins to form before you call.
- A washer hose springs a leak and damages behind your washer. The washer hose is not old, you stop the leak and report the damage immediately, but not before mold forms.
No matter if the mold in your Warren home is a covered loss or not---SERVPRO can help. We can walk you through the claims process; or we can work with you if it is not. Mold remediation is one of the cornerstones of our business. It is a very technical process, and you want to make sure it is done right by a professional.
Mold can spread quickly through your Conneaut home or business in as little as 48 hours. If you suspect that your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Replacing Items After Water Damage is Cost Effective
6/5/2023 (Permalink)
Opting for restoration over replacement is generally more environmentally friendly.
Restoring items damaged by water is often preferred over replacing them for several reasons:
- Cost-effectiveness: Restoring water-damaged items can be more cost-effective than replacing them entirely. Restoration methods such as drying, cleaning, and repairs are generally less expensive than purchasing new items.
- Sentimental value: Some items may hold significant sentimental value, such as family heirlooms, photographs, or personal belongings with emotional attachments. Restoration allows for the preservation of these cherished items, maintaining their sentimental value.
- Environmental impact: Opting for restoration over replacement is generally more environmentally friendly. By salvaging and repairing items, it reduces the demand for new products and minimizes the amount of waste that would end up in landfills.
- Time-saving: Restoration can often be a quicker process than searching for and purchasing replacements. This is especially true for unique or hard-to-find items that may require significant effort to replace.
- Insurance considerations: If you have insurance coverage for water damage, restoration costs are often covered to a certain extent. Replacing items may require additional out-of-pocket expenses that might not be fully covered.
However, it's important to note that not all items can be restored after water damage. Some items may be too severely damaged, or the cost of restoration may exceed the value of the item. In such cases, replacement may be the more practical option. It's advisable to consult with professionals specializing in water damage restoration to assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action for each specific situation. Sump Pump Overflow in Your Masury Home?
4/21/2023 (Permalink)
If a sump pump overflows, it means that the water level in the sump pit has risen higher than the capacity of the pump to remove it.
As of recently, Northeast Ohio has been experiencing severe spring weather. With these spring storms come major power outages and sump pump failures to your Niles home. If you’re a first time home owner in Howland, you may be wondering, “What is a sump pump?”. Let’s dive a little deeper…
A sump pump is a device that is used to remove excess water that has accumulated in a basement or crawl space. The sump pump is typically located in a sump pit, which is a hole in the ground that is designed to collect water.
If a sump pump overflows, it means that the water level in the sump pit has risen higher than the capacity of the pump to remove it. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as a power outage, a malfunctioning pump, or heavy rainfall that exceeds the pump's capacity.
An overflowing sump pump can cause water damage to the surrounding area, including the basement or crawl space where the pump is located. To prevent this from happening, it's important to regularly maintain the sump pump, test it to ensure that it's working properly, and install a backup battery or generator in case of power outages.
If your sump pump does overflow into the basement of your Lordstown home, it's important to immediately turn off the power to the pump and address the issue. This may involve repairing or replacing the pump, installing a larger pump, or taking steps to reduce the amount of water entering the sump pit. For a sump pump, we recommend contacting the professionals…us! SERVPRO of Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties has the abilities and expertise to make it, “Like it never even happened.”® Call us today at (330) 392-6355 for immediate assistance, or visit our website!

How to Stay Calm During Thunderstorms in Newton Falls, OH

Now that the warmer weather is on its way, chances are there will be a few thunderstorms rolling our way.
Now that the warmer weather is on its way, chances are there will be a few thunderstorms rolling our way. Storms can be a frightening experience for young kids. Here are some ways to deal with your child’s fears before the bad weather occurs from UW Health:
- Identify a comfortable and fun place in the house to go to during non-emergent storms that is relaxing and positive; finding a place away from windows, and the sights and sounds of the storm is often helpful. If it’s not a bedroom, consider bringing pillows, blankets, and other items to make the space feel cozy.
- Help your child make a “storm fun kit” that you bring out only during storms. Include activities like markers, puzzles, battery-operated electronic games, and packaged snacks. Make sure to include flashlights for everyone in the box in case the power goes out; darkness can make everything seem scarier. Kids love to play with flashlights, and often, they will feel safer having one at hand.
- Consider making a “storm game,” like getting “points” for each time there is thunder.

Conserving Water in Southern Trumbull County
4/21/2020 (Permalink)
Always turn off the tap when you’re not using it and turn it off tightly so no other water leaks through
With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, you can contribute to the cause by being mindful of water usage during your time inside. Here are some ways to save water while your stay-at-home order in Southern Trumbull County is still in place.
- Always turn off the tap when you’re not using it and turn it off tightly so no other water leaks through. When brushing your teeth, do not leave the water running. Only use the water to wet your toothbrush and rinse.
- You can put a bucket outside of your home to collect rain water to use on your indoor plants.
- If you are washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run continuously until you rinse your dishes. You can also wash your fruits and vegetables in a bowl or pan instead of running water.
- When washing your clothes, make sure you wash a full load of laundry and don’t waste water doing multiple half-full loads.
- If you have a small lawn, consider limiting how long you let your sprinkler run to water the front lawn.
- If you are using a water purifier, utilize the waste water coming from the water purifier for different cleaning purposes like mopping, car washing, or watering plants.
- Be sure to inform your child of these practices. Teach them ways to save water and do our part to preserve our planet.
If you have any questions about water conservation, feel free to reach out to us at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at (330) 392-6355. Taking these steps to save water could also prevent accidents, flooding and water damage in your home.

Category 3:
If the water damage is dark and black, this could be a very harmful bacteria that could contain fungi or dangerous contaminants like silt, pesticides or heavy metal. This type of damage can come from toilet backflow, seawater or sewage.

Weather Watches and Warnings in Trumbull County
3/24/2020 (Permalink)
During severe weather watches and warnings, it’s very important to have a media source available to receive alerts and updates.
During severe weather watches and warnings, it’s very important to have a media source available to receive alerts and updates. Whether it be radio or TV or a smart hand-held device, be sure to have a backup plan available in case severe weather knocks out power.
News, media and weather alert services will commonly broadcast the inclement weather watches and warnings in a variety of ways. It’s important to know the differences in a ‘watch’ and a ‘warning’ since they are both quite common.
First, lets get a formal definition of a ‘watch.’ A watch is issued when the surrounding atmospheric conditions are conducive for severe weather to develop. Watches are important and demand your attention but are not as urgent as a warning.
Secondly, but nonetheless important, are ‘warnings.’ A warning informs you that imminent, dangerous weather is looming. The National Weather Service issues a warning when radar has detected severe weather or an eyewitness reports seeing an event such as a tornado, a severe thunderstorm, flooding, etc. A warning means you are in immediate danger and you should seek shelter immediately.
Here is a brief definition of some of the common watches and warnings we hear frequently:
- Tornado Watch:When conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in the immediate area.
- Tornado Warning: When radar has indicated a strong rotation capable of producing a tornado at any time, or a trained spotter has reported a funnel cloud or tornado. It is recommended to take cover immediately. Stay tuned in for updates.
- Severe Thunderstorm Watch: When conditions exist for severe thunderstorms can easily develop.
- Severe Thunderstorm Warning: When a thunderstorm produces large hail 1 inch or larger in diameter and/or wind speeds exceeds 58 mph.
- Flash Flood Watch: When flash flooding is possible, even if severe weather isn’t in your immediate area.
- Flash Flood Warning: When flash flooding of rivers, streams, or urban areas is already occurring.
If you should suffer from water damages following any of these weather disasters, please call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at 330-392-6355 for your restoration needs. We are a 24/7 emergency services business with a quick response time and we're always ‘Here to Help.’

Hardwood Floors and Furniture Restoration in Warren,OH
9/20/2019 (Permalink)
Any kind of water damage can be a difficult task to handle. Luckily, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is here to help with specialized equipment an
Hardwood floors are a great addition to any home and can boost its overall value, as well as, increasing aesthetic appeal. Additionally, real wooden furniture can last a lifetime and generally carries an overall nicer appearance. In either case, water damage can be an overwhelming and compromise the wood.
Water damage can occur from cold drinks on a hot day, innocent children, clumsiness, pet accidents, broken appliances, and severe weather such as storms and heavy rainfall.
When it comes to furniture, dressers and coffee tables, they can easily get damaged by water or other liquid products. To help protect your wooden furniture from water damage follow these steps:
Materials Needed: A damp rag, stirring stick, bristle brush, sandpaper, Naphtha, polyurethane
Step 1: Use a damp rag to clean off the dusty surface
Step 2: Stir the polyurethane with a stick without shaking the can. Be sure to mix in all the material that may have settled at the bottom of the can.
Step 3: Dip about one inch of the brush into the polyurethane and begin running the in one direction along the dresser or piece of wooden furniture.
Another way to apply the polyurethane is with a rag to prevent air bubbles, but you need to thin the product by adding the same amount of Naphtha.
Step 4: To smooth out any bumps or bubbles, rub wet sand paper in a circular motion on the wood. Test a small section of the surface first, if it starts to “ball up,” the surface is not dry enough yet. Wait at least 30 minutes.
Following this process should help eliminate any water damage to your wooden furniture.
Water damage to hardwood floors can be a bit more challenging. Unfortunately, in many cases of a water loss or flooding, hardwood flooring can end up being a costly material to remove, and ultimately replace.
When the flooring gets wet, the wood absorbs the water and begins to swell and warp. Even if the water is only on the surface, it can seep in through the cracks and loosen the glue holding the flooring to the ground.
Depending on the type of water, you may want to clean it up yourself or call the technicians at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County. We use specialized drying equipment and industrial grade dehumidifiers to remove the water and moisture as quickly and efficiently as possible. It important to remove the water quickly and dry the flooring. The timing could potentially save the hardwood flooring in the long run and prevent mold growth.
Any kind of water damage can be a difficult task to handle. Luckily, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is here to help with specialized equipment and training. We believe in restoring as opposed to replacing, and we have the expertise to get the job done correctly! We are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Give us a call! (330) 392-6355

Does your Warren, OH Home Have a Water Damage Mold Problem?
3/19/2018 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Gutter Cleaning in Warren, OH
9/18/2017 (Permalink)
Checking and cleaning out your gutters for leaves at least once a week lowers your chance of interior or exterior water damage to your home.
Fall is finally upon us which means leaves begin to change and we can enjoy the fresh foliage.
However, with foliage comes falling leaves. Not only do leaves cover our lawns but they also cause gutters to clog. Although clogged gutters can be an annoyance at times they can also be harmful. Gutters are meant to prevent water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. If gutters go untouched, there is a strong chance rain water can leak into your home.
Have you ever cleaned your gutters before? If not, here are a few helpful tips to make the process a lot easier.
- Wear long sleeves and gloves. You never know how dirty the leaves actually are up there!
- Use a sturdy ladder. Self- explanatory. You would be surprised how many people are harmed from falling off ladders while cleaning their gutters! Also find a ladder with a standoff stabilizer (also called ladder horns). Certain ladders can damage and bend gutters and using ladder horns lowers the risk for damage.
- Scoop it up! Don't feel like using your hands? Pick up a child's sandbox shovel from the dollar store.
- Make clean-up easier by using a plastic tarp. Raking and throwing away leaves is already a time consuming task as it is. Take the leaves from your gutter and throw it on a plastic tarp. When you're done gather it up and throw it in a large trash bag.
- Rinse, Rinse, Rinse! You might think you're done after you remove the leaves from your gutter but you actually aren't! Take a garden hose and rinse out the gutters and downspouts to get rid of any excess dirt. Doing this also helps you spot any leaks in your gutters!

Frozen Pipes
2/9/2017 (Permalink)
Use a blow dryer to warm pipes
During winter in your Newton Falls area pipes often freeze during winter months. When temperatures get down around 20 degrees and sometimes above if the pipes are exposed to cold windy air usually due to cracks in walls pipes will freeze. When water in the pipes freeze it expands into ice putting pressure on the pipe and can cause it to burst leading to a broken pipe and a flood in your home. Pipes that are metal or water lines to things like pools, sprinklers, and interior pipes can burst no matter what the water is flowing through if it’s frozen. To prevent pipes from freezing it’s important to keep garage doors closed if water supply is in garage, open cabinets and doors, let water drip in facets, and keep it warm in the area where pipes are. If frozen pipes occur, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe; apply heat to the section of pipe, but avoid using open flame devices. To avoid this problem keep pipes warm. In the event that your pipes burst and flooding occurs, call the professionals to extract the water and make it like it never even happened at (330)392-6355. Pipe Bursts

When pipes burst they cause damage to property, homes, and sometimes entire areas of a town and roads for days. The most devastating part of pipe bursts aren’t the cost of the repair or even the loss of water, it is the damage that the water does to the homes. In one day the water accumulation in a house could be 9,600 liters of water. Winter is here, so by keeping your homes correctly heated and your pipes properly protected you can avoid a pipe burst in your Leavittsburg home. 3 Water Stages
11/14/2016 (Permalink)
Sewage backups should not be taken light considering that can be very dangerous by causing severe illness. The contaminated water and bacteria could lead to infectious diseases if not taken care of immediately. There are three different types of stages of water, three being the most hazardous. The first stage is clean water which is usually from a broke water line, but this stage can quickly turn into stage two or three if untreated. Stage two is usually from toilet or dish overflow and is considered gray water. Stage two may include bacteria and viruses and needs to be treated immediately to prevent stage three from occurring. Stage three water is extremely hazardous and contained with unsanitary water filled with bacteria; if this water is ingested it could lead to life-threatening illness or death and all contact to this water should be avoided. We are a 24/7 hour service and if any emergencies like this occur we are able to help here at SERVPRO.
Beware of Water
11/14/2016 (Permalink)
It is obvious that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. There are many ways to prevent many dangers that may occur from water and electricity. Keeping your appliances away from water except for washing machines and dishwashers can prevent fires from starting. One little drip onto a power cord can cause a home fire. Another simple suggestion is to refrain from touching electricity with wet hands to prevent electrocution. To inhibit electrical accidents, refrain from putting portable heaters in a bathroom. As tempting as it might be to carry your portable heater with you on a winter morning, this practice could cause a severe incident if any water were to spill. It is detrimental for your safety and well being to unplug all appliances from the outlet after finished to prevent any fires. If any fire incidents happen due to electricity or water, call SERVPRO to restore all of your damages back to "Like it never even happened."
