Prevention –
Try surrounding your house with sandbags to prevent water from entering your basement. You can lay a sheet of polyethylene and stack up to five layers of sand bags on top of each other. Make sure to fill the sandbags with sand up to two thirds full.
Preparation Before Flood –
Build an emergency kit containing essential items, such as a radio, flashlight and nonperishable items. If floods are common in your area, it would be best consider purchasing flood insurance.
Actions During Flood –
Immediately turn off any electrical device before water comes into contact. Avoid walking through moving water above 5 inches to prevent injuries. Listen to radio or television for emergency information and head for higher grounds if there are any flash flood warnings.
