Halloween Fire Safety in Niles, Ohio
10/27/2017 (Permalink)
Halloween is only days away. But did you know that decorations, costume choices, and candles inside jack-o-lanterns can cause home fires?
From 2011-2015, U.S. fire departments reported an estimated average of 840 home structure fires per year that began with decorations. The fires also caused 36 civilian injuries and nearly $11.4 million in direct property damage per year.
Below are some safety tips to keep your family and trick or treaters safe this halloween
- Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns.
- Watch choosing costumes with trailing fabric. If an open flame were near, the flame could watch on the fabric.
- Watch your decorations! Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper can catch fire very easily. This is why it is important to not use any type of open candle whatsoever since decorations are easily flammable. Instead, use other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
- Keep exits of your home clear from decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
- Most importantly, MAKE SURE ALL SMOKE ALARMS ARE WORKING IN YOUR HOME!
