Commercial or house fires can happen at any moment. But when disaster strikes, do you have a plan of action for escaping and notifying first respond services? Here are a few helpful tips and steps you can take to create an escape plan as well as help prevent a fire from happening.
- Install smoke detectors on each level of your home and near sleeping areas. It is also important to test the batteries monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. Changing the batteries every Daylight Savings Time is also another tip to maintain working smoke alarms.
- Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two ways to escape from every room in your home. This is a lot more difficult than you think. Using a template helps with these. These are available online.
- Practice your fire escape plan at least once a year. Designate a meeting place outside that is a safe distance from your home. Also practicing different crawling and stop, drop, and roll techniques helps!
- Program Police and Fire Department numbers in your phone. Dialing911 is a given but having your local police and fire department's numbers in your phone helps as well.
