How to Stop a Beeping Fire Alarm

When you hear a fire alarm going off in your home or business, what is your first thought? Probably, “oh no, where’s the fire?” But you’ve searched your home or business and everything is safe and there’s no sign fire of fire or smoke. A beeping fire alarm usually signals an emergency – usually.
What about when there is no fire, but your alarm continuously beeps? It turns out, there could several reasons that your alarm may be annoying you, rather than warning you.
- Reset Needed
Before you go out buying a new system or even new batteries, you may want to reset your detector first. If you are unsure about how to reset your smoke detector please refer to this video for additional help.
- Batteries
One of the more common causes for non-emergency related alarm beeping is the need for new batteries. If the battery in your detector is not operating at full power, the detector cannot function properly and may beep to signal that the battery is dying.
- Environmental Interference
If resetting and replacing the batteries still don’t silence your smoke detector, try to clean the device of any dust or other particles. Dust, cobwebs, and even temperature can cause your detector to beep. Try blowing air your detectors to remove any unwanted debris and then repeat step 1 and 2 as necessary.
As you can see, there are a few potential culprits responsible for the incessant beeping taking over your home. If none of these solutions fix your problem with your smoke detector, it may be time to replace it. The lifetime of a smoke alarm is typically between 8-10 years. If you don’t remember when you bought your smoke alarm, you can always check on the back for the manufacturing date.
